Q1. Read the following
text and answer the questions (i-vii) that follow:
(12 marks)
1. The toy industry in our country is still at a budding
stage, catering to a vast consumer base
of about a 500 million children. It helps
in taking the children to their world where things
happen. The use of traditional Indian games
and toys in schools makes children connect
with their heritage and has a lifelong
positive impact.
2. Toys can be used to teach many difficult
concepts very easily, exploring a child’s interests
and curiosity. Indian traditional games
like skipping, gilli-danda, sagargote (five stones),
conventional board games, and outdoor games
have always brought children together,
encouraging teamwork and social interaction.
3. Our ancestors have been preserving the
culture of storytelling by making toys which show
a perspective of life. Several influences
also led to a different set of toys depicting stories
from Indian culture. Every state in India
has its own set of traditional toys usually made
from clay, wood, coir, coconut shell, areca
nut, shells, pebbles, bamboo, pedanus leaves,
terracotta, porcelain, and many other
locally available items.
4. Every Indian state has their own style
and story related to their toy making industry. This
contributes to a unique name given to the
toys – Kondapalli from Andhra Pradesh,
Asharikandi terracotta from Assam,
Channapatna from Karnataka, dolls of Vilachery from
Tamil Nadu, the lacquered toys and
miniature utensils of Varanasi, the terracotta toys of
Gujarat, the wooden toys and colourful
puppets of Rajasthan, and many more.
5. The promotion of indigenous toys is very important. They not
only reflect the cultural
heritage, traditions, and stories, but also empower the local artisans by
providing them with
an opportunity towards entrepreneurship. They develop the skills of the
artisans like carving,
painting, and weaving. It helps in community development, ensuring solidarity,
promoting
cultural exchange and appreciation of their work and heritage globally. This
leads to
sustainable development too. Consequently, this promotes an inclusive and
globally
connected world while celebrating the richness of indigenous cultures.
